Fractions & Percentages

How to read 75%, 1/4, 12.5%. Written forms and how they map to fractions.

Practice (1)

Reading numbers and fractions in English — a small topic but it appears every year.

Fractions

1/2 = a half / one half. 1/3 = a third / one third. 1/4 = a quarter / a fourth. 3/4 = three quarters / three fourths. 1/5 = a fifth / one fifth. 1/8 = an eighth.

Percentages

5% = five percent. 20% = twenty percent. 75% = seventy-five percent. 12.5% = twelve point five percent (or one eighth as a fraction).

  • (One twentieth) is equal to (5%).
  • 1/20 = 5/100 = 5%.

Decimals

0.5 = (zero) point five. 12.5 = twelve point five. After the point, each digit is read separately.

Exam trap

'12.5% is an eighth' → TRUE. 'The written form of 75% is 3/4' → TRUE. 'The correct fraction for 20% is twenty percent' → FALSE (that's a percentage, not a fraction; the fraction is 1/5).
