Long John Silver, Captain Flint the parrot, Pew, Ben Gunn, Jim Hawkins, and the hunt for gold.

Practice (10)

Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. Young Jim Hawkins helps Dr Livesey and the squire find pirate treasure — but Long John Silver and his crew want it too.

Captain Flint — the parrot

Long John Silver had a parrot named Captain Flint. (Captain Flint was also the name of the famous pirate — and Silver's parrot was named AFTER him.)

Silver's parrot Captain Flint was named after…

A famous pirate.

Silver — what he had

Long John Silver had an inn (NOT one leg, NOT a scar, NOT a parrot — although those are commonly confused). He had an inn, so he knew all the sailors in Bristol.

Pew at the Admiral Benbow

When Pew sent his men inside the Admiral Benbow, they found the bag of money but Flint's writing (the map) had already been taken.

Ben Gunn and the flag

As soon as Ben Gunn saw the flag on the stockade, he asked Jim to tell the squire or the doctor to come and see him.

Dr Livesey's stroke

Dr Livesey was on his way to see Jim's father at the Admiral Benbow inn when Bill had his first stroke.

Tom's loyalty

When Tom said, 'I'd prefer to lose my hand than turn against my duty,' we understood that (a) Silver couldn't corrupt Tom and (b) Tom was not one of the honest men — wait, the exam answer is 'Both A and B' for one variant and 'Silver couldn't corrupt Tom' alone in another. Read the exact wording carefully.

Who cut the anchor?

Jim Hawkins was the one who cut the anchor from the ship — and he killed Israel Hands on board.

Captain Smollett's plan

Captain Smollett said they should attack the pirates only when they had known which sailors were for the pirates and which were not.
